Magí Garcías Frau

Pianist

Magí Garcías is an eclectic pianist born in Palma. His activity has led him to perform in countries such as Germany, France, Italy, Sweden, Austria and Poland. He has published 3 albums and his versatile profile combines the world of chamber music with improvisation and composition.


Throughout his career as a pianist he has received several international awards such as 1st prize at the Steinway Förderpreis Competition in Nürnberg, 2nd prize at the Concurso Internacional de les Corts in Barcelona, the Diploma di Merito at the Concorso Internazionale Pianistico Maria Giubilei, the Scholarship Prize at the Paola Baschetti International Competition, the Ravel prize at the 13th San Daniele Piano Meeting and 3rd prize at the Certamen Gabriel Teruel Machí.


In 2017 he formed the Sosnowska-Garcías Duo (cello and piano) with cellist Zuzanna Sosnowska. The Sosnowska-Garcías Duo is a young and passionate chamber music ensemble with several prizes and experience in international festivals. They are winners of the International Chamber Music Competition Salieri-Zinetti of Verona (2019, 1st prize ex aequo). In 2022 they won the 2nd prize at the International Swedish Duo Competition in Katrineholm (member of WFIMC). They have been invited to international festivals such as the J. Waldorff Festival in Radziejowice (PL), Julita Festival (SE), Ostinato International Chamber Music Festival (HR), Linköpping Kammarmusicforening (SE) or the Brahms Festival 2022 Mallorca-Pollença (ES). Together they have performed in different countries such as Spain, France, Croatia, Sweden, Poland, Italy and Germany.


The most fundamental years of his musical education took place in Spain and Germany. In Zaragoza he had the opportunity to learn from artists such as the Quiroga Quartet, Iván Cítera, Lluís Rodríguez, Enrique Bagaría and Nacho de Paz. He then moved to the city of Weimar where he graduated in his Master's studies in the class of Professor Gerlinde Otto in the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt. Subsequently he studied his "Meisterklasse" degree at the Hochschule für Musik Nürnberg in the class of the pianist and fortepianist Pr. Dr. Aurelia Visovan.

The most influential masterclasses for his development have come from great masters such as Claudio Martínez Mehner, Natalia Trull, Aurelia Visovan, Troels Svane or Dirk Mommertz.


Garcías has had the opportunity to perform with orchestras such as the Bad Reichenhaller Philharmoniker, the Orquesta Sinfónica de Ibiza or the Orquesta de Cámara de Mallorca. He has also performed with young orchestras such as the Joven Orquesta Leonesa, the CSMA Solidarity Orchestra or the EOIB Orchestra.


It is worth mentioning his performances in cities like Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, Nürnberg, Warsaw, Bialystok, Breda, Verona, Mantuva, Graz, Logroño, Palma, León, Ávila, Sevilla, Valencia, Zaragoza, Annaberg, Bad Reichenhall or Weimar, and his participation in festivals such as the International Chopin Festival in Valldemossa, the Brahms Festival 2022 in Mallorca, the Torroella de Montgrí Festival, etc. His recordings have been retransmited in Catalunya Ràdio, Rádio Clásica RTVE, Ib3 Ràdio and Tv3. In the Contemporary-Music field he participaded in a tour with John Cage's music performing his Sonatas for Prepared Piano in different cities. He also world-premiered the opera for piano and baritone "La Veu Sàuria" written by Mariona Vila and produced by the Diavolus in Música Opera Company.


He has recorded 3 albums, and his latest album (Refractio VOL. I: Frederic Mompou) has been widely recognised by the specialised critics as an innovative project of quality and sensitivity (a project carried out together with the jazz pianist Diego Hervalejo). Magí Garcías has also written the music for the album "Nuredduna", based on the text by the poet Costa i Llobera, and in 2018 he published "Abans que t'adormis", with music by the  composer Sergi Ramis (1990-2017). A CD produced by Garcías that includes chamber music, ensemble and collaborations with composers such as Pablo Carrascosa and Nuño Fernández Ezquerra.


Magí Garcías combines his artistic work with teaching. He is an associate professor at the Conservatorio Superior de las Islas Baleares and has had the opportunity to accompany masterclasses by professors such as Thomas Indermühle, Michelle Wegwart, Ramón Ortega or Dudu Carmel (working in the string, wind and voice departments). He has also worked as a pianist at the SommerAkademie des Pre-college in Cologne organized by the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln.
